i am so completely done with pc’s. we’ve been using vista on our home computer now for three months or so, and it is incredibly frustrating, to say the least. being a hardcore mac user for the last four years at work, i now have the burden of knowing how much better the user experience with a computer can be. windows, just doesn’t do it.
i would go out on a limb and say that if pc users gave a mac an honest chance for a good sixty days or so, most of them would feel the same way. of course, this doesn’t apply to people who have programs/games they use on a daily basis that are not mac compatible. although, studies have now shown that mac’s run windows better than pc’s do with the boot camp feature mac’s come with. plus, the list of programs that don’t run with mac is dwindling by the day.
sure, mac’s have a small portion of the market share now, but leopard (the new mac operating system) is receiving rave reviews, while vista is largely being welcomed to luke-warm (at-best) fanfare. in fact, lots of people are actually downgrading back to windows xp. a large amount of analysts are predicting the market-share of mac users will continue to grow with the momentum apple has behind it, even claiming into the twenty percent range within two years.
anyway, new imac’s are currently running (low end, 20-inch monitor models) for $1,200, which is an absolute steal if you ask me.

A steal? Did you see the special at Best Buy this weekend for PC’s? $199.00. That’s one fifth(?) the price of your ’steal’. I acknowledge that it was ‘doorbuster’ and hard to get but still I can get a good pc for less than $500. I have used both and you pay mightily for that user experience. Most people cannot justify that type of money unless they are graphic artists etc. 20% market share!? Ok. I have been hearing that for decades. I guess price does not play a role for these analysts. Next thing you know 20% of the population will have digital slr’s instead of point and clicks as well :-)
…isn’t there something to be said for “you get what you pay for?”
Yes you get what you pay for but the average consumer does not need something much more than a fancy typewriter (Office Apps, Web, Email, Pictures etc). Basically most of us need 4 cylinder computers and a Mac is an 8 cylinder.
My PC magazine talks about how 3 of the 4 versions of Vista suck and points out that the total install base of Vista matches that of the Mac OS. To improve on Vista the author recomends 3 solutions, 1 of which I know you will love. - Scrap the current Vista and release Vista 2.0 with some stolen features from the Mac OS. I had to email you that line.
