so ryanne was importing some old cd’s onto our imac tonight, when she came across a little gem. a cd recording of the high school chorale (audition choir) her and i were both in, in 1998. now most of the cd is AWFUL, but this one song, other than having a pretty crappy blend and bad recording, well i thought it was ok.
ryanne was an alto. i was a bass, so those silky smooth lows… that’s yours truly.
these are my opinions! let me know in the comments if you agree/disagree/hate me…
top ten favorite albums of 2008 (that i discovered in 2008)
10. coldplay - viva la vida
9. m83 - saturdays = youth
8. snow patrol - a hundred million suns
7. jason mraz - we sing
6. onerepublic - dreaming out loud
5. joshua radin - simple times
4. once - the original motion picture soundtrack
3. sanctus real - we need each other
2. metallica - death magnetic
1. tenth avenue north - over and underneath
that’s impressive. never before this year would i have rated a christian album in my top ten, let alone two! and on top of that, my favorite album of the year being a little known christian band. i realize that the once soundtrack and the onerepublic album both came out in 2007, but i only discovered them this year.
ok, now for a little more factual evidence. here is a screen grab of my top 25 most played songs of 2008 (through itunes).
this was definitely the year of “instrumental” for me. god is an astronaut, explosions in the sky (which didn’t make it in the top 25, but they’re all over the top 100), sigur ros and a buffet line of others. if it didn’t have lyrics, i was all over it this year.
this post is mainly for all my cedarcreek.tv readers, but anyone else interested in a great christmas mix cd may also want to read on.
generally speaking, every different series at cedarcreek.tv i get the honor of making a mix cd to play between services. when december rolls around, that becomes a little more difficult. i mean, how many different and good ways are there to sing jingle bells? this year i tried to go with a little more funky, little more indie, little more “chill.” and i’m fairly positive i’ve succeeded.
here’s the playlist, and following that are two samples (you rss readers may have to visit the site); indiana christmas by straight no chaser, and hark the herald angels sing by peas. give them a listen!
first things first, got to get some music! my first christmas music recommendation this year is for the newly released straight no chaser (original members) album, titled holiday spirits. don’t know who straight no chaser is? let me refresh your memory:
the album is, other than a live recording of the above video, completely studio mastered, and is incredible. i’ve been listening to it non-stop for the last hour or so and am amazed. check them out here.
it’s always funny to me that i hear the song that matches how i feel just when i need to hear it. i’m not niave and i’m not pie in the sky and i realize that life is more complicated than these song lyrics allow for, but nevertheless, it helped me today. thanks to my hometown heroes sanctus real. give a listen:
I think I caught a glimpse of
Life without friends
Bitter, empty, hollow, dark and lonely
We never meant to hurt each other
So Can’t we trust again
And take it as a chance
To keep on growing
I don’t know why it doesn’t come easy
But I know that we could be happy
If we’d only learn to love
Oh oh we need each other
So what’s the fighting for
Oh oh we need each other
Please don’t close the door
Oh oh we need each other
Through all the highs and lows
Oh oh we need each other
Cuz no one’s meant to live alone
Life revolves around the need
Of having someone
Causing every complicated feeling
Oh and I don’t want to lose you
And there is nothing wrong with
Telling me what you need
To keep our love strong
It’s just a part of being a family
Taking the good with the bad and the ugly
If we could only learn to love
Oh oh we need each other
So what’s the fighting for
Oh oh we need each other
Please don’t close the door
Oh oh we need each other
Through all the highs and lows
Oh oh we need each other
Cuz I don’t want to be alone
