I may not have mentioned it before, but I have become quite the fan of Anderson Cooper 360. I think it’s one of the most unbiased news programs on television… and in reality, I wasn’t even searching for that, as I have found myself leaning quite a bit in favor of the liberals lately anyway. But, last night, I was quite saddened by their coverage of the Virginia Tech tragedy.
As I’m sure everyone knows by now, this deranged kid who committed all the murders, Cho, sent a package to NBC right after the first shootings, and before the second. The package contained videos, pictures, and a large “manifesto.” NBC did the right thing (I’m sure only after making copies of everything first) and turned over all the material to the authorities. Well, after a few hours had passed… the package contents were on every major news station.
Now, I didn’t watch any other program, so I can’t speak for them, but I’d be surprised to find out anyone covered it any different than CNN and AC-360, which is to say that they showed this guys homemade crazy-as-all-get-out videos non-stop, on repeat for two straight hours. What purpose does this possibly serve? Mo Rocca (that guy who does all the commentary shows on VH1) had a great article on his blog today about it, here are some highlights;
Here’s a challenge: Give me a single upside to NBC showing the video, even the stills, from Cho’s press kit. (Sorry, no prize this time.) Just one good thing that will come from this.
You don’t need to tell me all the bad things: further desensitization, inspiring of copycats … I got those covered. (Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris left their fans wanting more image-wise. Cho’s iconography might be kind of hackneyed but it’s plentiful, perfect for screensavers. A few may even make the leap to t-shirts, a la Patty Hearst. Or how about “Cho” instead of “Che”?)
It really is sad… because Mo is right, the only things that come out of showing that footage, besides feeding our voyeuristic desires, are the things he mentioned.
Sometimes, I get really angry with God. I was quite pleased to learn that not only is this normal, but healthy in the Christian faith.
That being said, even with Kyle literally, just speaking about evil & suffering at CedarCreek.tv this last weekend, I am utterly pissed at God right now. I know He doesn’t have to be fair, I get that, good people suffer every day, and there is a reason for it. The better question is why do good things happen to bad people… I get all of that…
I’m just struggling right now… this Virginia Tech thing is unimaginable, well… it was.
And while I may be pissed off at God, I am infinitely more angry at the absolutely moronic people in this world that would cause this sort of senseless, stupid violence. If it doesn’t come out that the kid that did this was seriously deranged mentally (wouldn’t he have to be?), if it turns out he was a normal kid angry about a test score, or his girlfriend cheating on him, or something… I might just lose it. How can one keep a positive outlook, and faith in humanity? If you can tell me… you’re a better person than me.
So I almost came here and wanted to write (again) about how much I loathe Ann Coulter, and how I believe there is a good chance that she is the biggest beeee-yotch in mainstream political culture, but I don’t feel like getting riled up again. I tell no lie, yesterday I was pretty pissed off for the majority of the day, I mean seriously, how is the mainstream media NOT making a bigger deal out of this?! I allowed her to get under my skin, and she was in my head all freakin’ day… deep too, which is giving her exactly what she wants.
Instead, I want to write a little about a couple culinary delights. Last week, I made this dish that I found on Slashfoodtwice. We made it the first time, and accidentally got the wrong kind of cheese (and forgot to purchase nutmeg), but still liked it enough to make it again on Sunday when we had our friends Jay and Leah over for dinner and a movie, this time with the correct cheese (but still forgot the nutmeg).
Now, on Wednesday I’m going to give home-made chinese food a try. Also a recipe I found at Slashfood, for General Tso’s chicken. I can only hope it comes out as good as theirs looks.
Also for the record, the movie we watched last Sunday, “Gridiron Gang” with The Rock was fantastic. Call me a homer, I don’t care… but I would so start watching WWE again if The Rock came back. The man just oozes charisma and personality. A couple nights ago Ryanne and I watched “United 93″, and well, that movie just wasn’t sad at all (insert sarcasm here).
So, Ann Coulter has come out in support of Mitt Romney for the 2008 Presidential Election. It boggles my mind how something like the speech she made below gets less press than Senator Clinton (whom I do NOT support by the way) cracking a bad-timed sex joke about her husband. This country, and it’s conservatives are so out of whack, I don’t even know where to begin. Sure, if you’re a conservative you can come out and say “I don’t agree with Ann Coulter,” and that’s great… but you really need to get with all of your little conservative friends and have someone who continually make hate-monger type remarks ousted from all of your biggest events. Don’t forget it was just last year, at this very same event, that she referred to muslims as “ragheads.”
“Viewer warning: there will be no mention of Britney Spears’ baldness or rehab in tonight’s broadcast, nor will there be any mention of Anna Nicole’s “body possession” hearing.”
What’s worse, even more ridiculously sad than that?
That Kevin Federline may actually be the better, well at least more stable, parent to his kids. Oh sweet irony.
