…the negativity backlash - part three (obama)

obama promised change. he promised no more old-style politics. while not direct, he promised a clean campaign.

well, i think we can all agree that times have changed, and those promises are gone like the wind. lets not even wonder about the context of the current negativity the obama campaign is employing against john mccain — which is to say if he’s gone negative only because mccain did — rather i want to focus solely on the purpose behind obama’s recent turn to negative attack ads.

in this day and age, where the television is generally the most trusted information-giver in any given household, is it even possible to win an election anymore without going negative? i try not to dwell on the fact that obama broke his “promise,” and instead i focus on the fact that he made the promise in the first place.

look, it’s no secret barack obama is young. some would say he’s inexperienced, some would say niave. i think he was indeed niave to believe that he would become the president of the united states of america without using negative attack ads. that pains me to say, because i desire so much more than that, i want better… but it’s the sad truth. part of what initially drew me to obama was his inexperience. the way i saw it, we’ve had the good ‘ole boys running washington for the last eight years, and i’m personally not happy with where we are so why not bring in some fresh blood? lately, i think that his inexperience has shown, but not in a policy sense or anything that pertains to running the whitehouse.

instead, we’re now focused on him no longer being the “agent of change” in all the ways that we were led to believe. there is this elephant in the room, that if he broke this one promise, how many more are just empty rhetoric?

i don’t have any quotes to put in this post. it’s hard to find a whole lot of articles discussing the recent turn towards negativity that obama has taken. i attribute it to a few things; the fact that i loathe fox news, ann coulter and drudge report, so i refuse to go there for quotes - the fact that it’s recent, and just hasn’t been reported much - and the fact that until the field is leveled a bit (mccain has been at this for a while now) i think the media will give obama a little grace.

i’m not an idiot, and i realize that the media has it’s biases… though i don’t think it’s as overblown as some people make it out to be. i truly believe that there will be a backlash against obama’s turn towards negative attack ads, soon.

could obama have won without going negative? i don’t think so. not in our current cultural climate where the television is king. will obama win by going negative? only time will tell.

as i said yesterday about mccain, the same applies to obama. to obama’s credit, i believe this is not what he wanted to do. i believe he too is repeating to himself “the end justifies the means” while he tries to get to sleep at night.

the end justify the means… or does it?

…the negativity backlash - part two (mccain)

as i said yesterday, it’s unfortunate that politics have to come to this. i find it sad that to “sell” the greatest man-made political system on earth (democracy), we have to resort to attacking each others character.

that said, i sympathize for john mccain.

quoted from jonathan martin of politico.com;

McCain seems to have made a choice that many politicians succumb to but which he had always promised to avoid - he appears ready to do whatever it takes to win, even it if soils his reputation.

“We recognize it’s not going to be 2000 again,” said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers, alluding to the media’s swooning coverage of McCain’s ill-fated crusade against then-Gov. George W. Bush and the GOP establishment. “But he lost then. We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”

Rogers, who hung tough with McCain through the dark days of the primary and has lived through every high and low of this turbulent and unpredictable race, argues that they tried to run a high-ground campaign and sought to keep the candidate in front of the media in the fashion he enjoys. His point: No one paid any attention.

and to mccain’s credit, everything in there is true. when i saw mccain live and in person in a small cafe in perrysburg back in march, i was truly on the fence between him and obama. it certainly wasn’t for his policies, but it’s because i thought the man just bled character. a model of being above the fray.

the mccain camp held this position for a long time. but, as the quote above says… people stopped listening.

by any standard, obama should win in november in a landslide. the stars were perfectly aligned for it. the most unpopular (republican) president in the history of keeping track of popularity, a country absolutely desperate for something different, and incredibly energized support-base… it should have been a cake-walk. and frankly, it probably would have been had mccain stayed on the straight and narrow.

that’s not to say obama is not at fault for where he is. looking back, he probably should have accepted at least some of those town hall debates. he probably should have gotten to the “red-meat” policy talks a little sooner, and he probably should have always pounded it into himself and his staff that no matter what the media or mccain camp says, they’re the underdog. i think arrogance came into play, and just as mccain decided to switch gears, which created the current situation.

i say all this to say, that while i don’t agree at all with this kind of politics, i understand why mccain is doing it. “the ends justify the means” is i’m sure one of his favorite sayings right now. and to be perfectly fair, from what i know of mccains character, i’m sure this is absolutely eating him up inside. i’m willing to bet he’s taking no pride in what he and his campaign are doing to try and ensure a victory in november. again, from jonathan martin;

“Every day not talking about the economy, the war and how to fix a broken system is a victory for McCain,” said John Weaver, a former top strategist to the nominee who left the campaign last year. “They’re going to ride it as long as they can and as long as the mainstream media puts up every ridiculous charge.”

The negative and often exaggerated or misleading claims being made about Obama and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, especially those playing on Palin’s gender, are just too irresistible for the process-consumed online and cable news media that now drives the campaign conversation, Weaver said.

the ends justify the means.

…the negativity backlash has begun - part one

nobody can deny that the presidential election has taken an increasingly negative tone the last few weeks. while i’m not one for pointing fingers, i doubt there are many people who would deny that the mccain campaign “started it,” for lack of a better term. i find it unfortunate that the obama campaign is following suit, but i find it even more unfortunate that for obama to win, he must enter into this kind of campaign. this “politics of fear,” “karl rove tactics,” “swift-boating,” or whatever you want to call it… obviously works. americans, for the most part are just not motivated enough to learn the truth on their own and instead opt for trusting whatever the television tells them. al gore (regardless of what you feel about him) hits the nail on the head with this quote from his book “the assault on reason”;

“In the world of television, the massive flows of information are largely in only one direction, which makes it virtually impossible for individuals to take part in what passes for a national conversation. Individuals receive, but they cannot send. They hear, but they do not speak. The “well-informed citizenry” is in danger of becoming the ‘well-amused audience.’”

politics have become entertainment. and it’s not the fault of any one entity, be it the media or a certain campaign or the american people. it’s a combination of all of them. the brutal truth is that americans love drama, politicians know it, and the media covers it because it’s what the american people are buying. like it, love it, or hate it… these politicians and strategists are incredibly smart, and are only giving the american people what they want. how else can we explain our ridiculous addiction to “entertainment news.” how do we explain being glued to the tv to hear about what’s happening to britney, paris, nicole, lindsey, kfed, or any other first-name only celebrity that i don’t even have to mention the last name because you all know who i’m talking about already.

i’m holding my positions a little closer to the vest these days. i’m more inclined to describe myself as an independent than ever before. i have my choice for the presidential election, but it’s not because of a “lesser of two evils” approach that i think is just a cynical response to the process. not that i blame people for it, politics can be tiring. i’m getting tired of them, and i’m about as passionate about the process as someone not actually “in” politics can be. but i have come to my choice, as humbly as i can put it, from an intelligent and honest inquiry into both campaigns. i am an “informed” citizen that makes the time to pay attention to both sides.

i’ve drifted from my point.

the point here, is that over the last few days, i’m starting to see a backlash against the negativity. most of it has been directed at mccain. now i know the mccain supporters our there will come out in droves and say things like “see! the media loves obama!” but the fact is that it’s true. up until friday, obama had for the most part, stayed out of the negative television ad game. there was no made-up fantasies about lipstick-insults, there was no gross distortion of a child sex safety law, there was very little that wasn’t policy-based coming from camp obama. granted, some of those policy-based ads were misleading, but none of them dealt with character or personality attacks.

now the unfortunate part, is this backlash is starting just as obama is starting to get “his hands dirty,” so to speak. yesterday the obama camp released an ad that played off mccain’s age, insulting his ability to use email or the internet. it was lame, and while not uncalled for (in the sense of to win, you must go dirty), it was in bad taste.

i am not a political strategist by any means. i’m sure all of those are in obama’s ear telling him he must go negative if he wants to win in november. i’m sure they’re in his ear telling him that he just has to stomach it, because getting in the whitehouse is worth it.

if i had the opportunity to have a conversation with barack obama however, i would tell him nothing is worth selling yourself short. nothing is worth lowering yourself to the worst in people. i would tell him that he is better than this. i would tell him that the american people need someone to rise above this, to show us that it’s possible to be the bigger man and actually get rewarded for it. we need someone to be the “nice guy” and finish first.

unfortunately, i would also tell him that he’ll probably lose.

americans are just too addicted to glorified character “snuff” films. if it bleeds, it leads… and that is, sad to say, not the media’s fault.

it’s ours.

…i know i’m late to this

9/11.

i wasn’t going to make a blog post about it. i figured everyone else and their mother would, and really… i don’t have much to say on the subject. it’s a deeply profound event in my life, that to be honest, i hold pretty close to the vest. i was working for a local residential/commercial alarm company at the time, and i was out driving in my company truck listening to some morning talk radio show out of detroit when it started. i immediately rushed home to turn on the television, and i watched the second plane hit, and the towers collapse on live television. to this day, i’m amazed at the fact that eventually, i actually went back into work that day.

anyways, as i said i wasn’t going to post about this. that was until i found a video from one of my comedic heroes, jon stewart. the video embedded below, is probably not what you expect. it is the very first time the daily show went on the air after 9/11, and i think jon about sums up for me how i feel about that day.

…beautiful love

i admit freely that i am not a “deep” christian. my theory is that until i get the two greatest commandments down (love god, love others), i probably shouldn’t try and tackle things like the physical location of hell, the proper timing of the rapture, so on and so forth. so many christians spend so much time searching for “deeper” teaching while ignoring the chance to show christ’s love. don’t misunderstand me, i’m not saying we shouldn’t study… but we need to keep the balance of remembering to not just study our faith, but live out our faith as well.

i believe christianity, at it’s core, is the greatest love story ever told. are there ugly parts of the story? of course. but there are ugly parts to everything that is beautiful. a rose comes from dirt, sunrises come from darkness, babies from out bloody and nasty looking.

i am a visual person. i see god in the beauty of the world. i see god in the beauty of a moment captured. i see god in the beauty of love shared and shown. i think it’s part of what drew me to photography in the first place. when i get to capture a beautiful moment on film, i feel connected to jesus in a way i can’t fully describe.

i’m going all over the place with this post. these are just some of my thoughts that i’ve been pondering on while listening to the beautiful new song from charlie hall called “scenes.” give the song a listen or five. listen to it while not focusing on anything else, and see where your thoughts take you. this is the best version i can find for you to listen to RIGHT NOW, i highly recommend you check out the single though from wherever you purchase music.

chill and cold and flakes of snow, ice and sleet, frost and cold, each storm cloud and thunder bolt, lifts my mind to you, every work and every power, every second of every hour, fall of dew and sweet rain showers, lifts my mind to you, summer wind, fire and heat, autumn leaves and blooms of spring, ocean waves and mountain streams, lifts my mind to you

i see you in every scene, i bet you are thinking about me, i have such a short memory so you keep reminding me of you

as i lay me down to sleep, as i walk on city streets, as i laugh with friends and feast, it lifts my mind to you, as my children play and run, in the news with wars and guns, in the church where songs are sung, it lifts my mind to you, deep inside the beggar’s eyes, as for sweet love i fight, on the radio at night, it lifts my mind to you.
