…hd-dvd vs. blu-ray — the winner is?
January 9, 2008 – 7:05 pmi’ve been saying it since day one of owning a ps3, which just happened to be the day ps3’s were released (got really lucky on circuitcity.com). eventually, no matter how long it took… blu-ray would win. if for no other reason than the fact that it’s built into the ps3. granted, the ps3 started off really slow, but it’s picked up, and will continue to do so as more and more console-specific games are picked up, which in turn will catapault sales of ps3’s, and consequently will raise the already 2-1 ratio that blu-ray movies are purchased over hd-dvd movies.
well, if you didn’t see the news (or don’t care), warner has gone to blu-ray exclusivity. due to this, in a specific opt-out clause that paramount had built into their contract (if warner went blu-ray exclusive, paramount can get out of their hd-dvd contract), it’s being reported from many many many sources that paramount is days away from declaring a move from hd-dvd to blu-ray. and now, just today, i’m reading that universal will follow suit when their contract with hd-dvd expires at the end of january.
so, for those of you who have been (wisely) sitting on the fence before making the jump into hd movies, it’s fairly safe now to go with blu-ray. even if, and this is a big if, paramount and universal don’t jump ship as fast as has been reported, it’s only elongating the death of hd-dvd. the writing has already been on the wall… the war will eventually tip to blu-ray. i do believe it’ll happen sooner rather than later however, especially with the recent warner announcement.

but for those of you who believe that everything is going to bytes on a hard drive somewhere, save your money, sell all your vhs, dvds, and blu-rays… you won’t need them in the future and your house will remain cleaner.
ps blu-ray is such a cooler name anyways.
i myself am waiting for the day when my movie collection is held in a memory card the size of a quarter…high definition even… and my tv is actually a hologram that pops up in the middle of the room.
ie http://www.vizoo.com (check out “free format” and “cheoptics” from vizoo) there is stuff on youtube. you’ll like it. its worth setting aside 10-15 minutes.

I am a Wii owner, so these terms like HD-DVD, Blu-ray, and DVD are foreign to me.
