These last few days have served as a reminder to me just how much I love going to the movies. The drive-in is great too, but it’s the experience of going to that gigantic screen inside of a movie theater that I prefer.
As has been made abundantly clear already in this blog, I had the opportunity to see Transformers on Tuesday. I wrote a very quick post about it after seeing the film, but I was not yet ready to discuss too much of what I had thought of the film. This wasn’t because I was trying to figure out whether or not I liked it, rather it was all about the fact that I was trying to figure out how to talk about it without sounding like a total and utter fan boy.
I’ve thrown that all out the window though.
Transformers has surpassed all other movies in my top list. It has vaulted itself to become my favorite movie of all time. From the moment the movie started, it was a non-stop adrenaline rush. I have never in my life been so into a movie. From start to finish, I was glued to my seat and didn’t dare to allow my mind wander. I swear on all things holy it was a frickin’ miracle I didn’t burst into tears of joy the very moment Optimus Prime transformed from his auto form to the robotic leader of the Autobots and announced his name “I am Optimus Prime.” Later, I had shivers up and down my spine when Prime announced to the other Autobots that “freedom is the right of all sentient beings.”
It’s been talked about elsewhere, but I truly believe the “manliness” this robot exudes, Optimus Prime could be argued as one of the best male role models that a generation of men who are becoming increasingly more feminine could ever ask for. Just last weekend I found a twenty-something male walking around wearing the tightest female (and embroidered) jeans I have ever seen. We have men going out and buying hair and skin products that cost more than my electric bill. Then in rolls a flame coated, long-nosed semi-truck. This imagery on it’s own is enough to convey the masculinity of the character. But of course, we all know that this is just the beginning. The character of Optimus Prime — an optimal leader in their prime — is everything a generation searching for what it means to be a man needs to know. Leadership, Strength, Honor, Integrity, Character, Truth, Justice, and most importantly and often overlooked amongst the new generation of Transformers fans, Self-Sacrifice. This is a character that does the right thing, for no other reason than it’s the right thing to do.
I could talk forever about Optimus Prime, but I digress.
Continuing about the movie, the special effects were unlike anything ever seen before. You walk out of that theater believing that nine-story tall robots can actually exist. I also can’t talk enough about the job Shia Lebeouf did with the character of Sam Witwicky. It was truly two hours and twenty three minutes of pure bliss.
On another topic,
Ryanne and I went to see License to Wed last night. While nowhere near as impressive as Transformers, it was still a cute movie. John Krasinski did a great job on the big screen, and the movie as whole was quite funny. Surprisingly enough, most of the movie’s comedic moments were stolen from the more experienced Robin Williams by The Office alum.
