…top ten favorite movies

so the weekend is definitely where i’m responding to these chain thing-a-ma-jiggies. this week i was tagged by rick again to list my top ten favorite movies.

the rules of this particular meme are: 1. list your top ten favorite films (in no particular order). 2. if you are tagged, you have to post and tag 3-5 people. 3. link back to the one who tagged you.

so, in no particular order, here goes:

  • garden state - i truly believe zach braff is one of the voices for my generation and age group. this film so far has been his best (although the last kiss was very good). the story, writing, and acting were all wonderful in this film that in a lot of ways connected with my own personal journey
  • superman returns - i know… people think i’m crazy when i say this. i may just be a superman junkie, but i really though bryan singer did an amazing job with this film. it may not have had as much action as most comic book movies, i thought that this film was more important as a reintroduction to the character of superman. and, it was by far and away the most beautiful (in terms of cinematography) film i’ve seen in years.
  • high fidelity - i’m a huge john cusack fan, and this film was incredible. nothing earth shattering, just a fun movie all about the perfect mixtape.
  • shawshank redemption - i’ve probably seen this movie more than any other. it never gets old. from start to finish this film is near-perfect.
  • almost famous - cameron crowe is one of my favorite filmmakers, and this movie has a great heart, a great script, and great music.
  • the lord of the rings - what top ten list is complete without this trilogy?
  • once - best movie soundtrack i’ve ever heard, a real and raw story about relationships.
  • crash - i love movies that challenge me… i can’t think of a film that has done so more than this.
  • rent - the musical is great, but the medium of film allows you to do so much more (the flashback scenes during “one song glory” are a perfect example) with an incredible story about the redemptive power of love.
  • oceans 11 & 13 - yeah i’m cheating by putting both of these up. but i love a good caper story as much as the next guy. when you add in a brilliantly witty script with the incredible acting chops that these movies have (clooney, pitt, damon, cheadle, roberts, garcia, to name a few) it’s hard not to list this in a top list.

and now for the taggie-tags… even though i’m sure nobody is going to do it: ben, smithers, t, brody.
